Friends and foes,
Please gather,
Sit together and speak thy truth.
Perhaps we can settle the swords and the jabs,
Perhaps …
“Sure!” spoke Innocence, beautiful, suave creature,
From the depths of naïve knowledge, she said:
“We can reach togetherness,
After all, we are in this together….”
“Really?” says the Skepticism
“It seems that you glide through time learning nothing!
Innocence, you’re just beautiful passing beauty….”
“Passing? No!”, says Innocence,
“I’m always here, for without me how would you love?
How would you hate?”
“Love? Hate?” says Rationality
“After I made a considerable number of records over a long period of time,
I consider that….
It’s all a pile of whims!”
“Maybe,” says the Idealism
“But the man should always create another illusion,
I am not ready to give up on dreams!”
“I am surprised you’re still here, Idealism!
In an official universe,
Where relationships, careers, life…. is predetermined,
How have you not succumbed
To day-by-day unhappiness inertia?” asked Rationality.
“Silence! All kneel! Surrender!” shouted someone from behind,
“Accept my yoke and we will be saved!”
It was Knowledge, demanding to be queen.
They all fell silent,
Innocence became guilty,
Rationality started to bow,
Idealism became aggressive,
Knowledge……did not become queen.

I really like the ‘courtliness’ of this; the theatre of it, I suppose I mean. It works well with the chessboard image, obviously. I often wonder about the imagery of posts and how much the written piece is changed (for the both the reader and writer) by the picture. I sometimes go back into my (ahem) archives and change the post image just to see if and what happens! Well, it’s good to have a hobby 🙂
I think your piece is strong enough with or without the chessboard.

An interesting construct – a dialogue between different aspects of human mentality and character. The Idealism’s stanza particularly appeals to me.
I think that, by virtue of how this poem is constructed, there are literal and allegorical levels to its meaning.
I can envisage this poem being extended to include other aspects of human mentality and character, with the dialogue between them continuing.

This poem also raises questions of philosophical nature as to what exactly is the connection between knowledge and innocence, scepticism, rationality and idealism, and how does knowledge interacts with and relates to innocence, scepticism, rationality and idealism.

Thank you for reading and interpreting my poem. I think the Idealism stanza it is my favorite too, as it breathes hope and I am incurable when it comes to that, no matter what. Yes, this poem can be truly can be expanded in various ways, perhaps when I will have more time in my hands I will write a play.

Given that you turned abstract concepts into characters, this allows you to explore and discuss philosophical issues via the means of human interactions and relationships. Therefore, you can turn deep philosophical problems into human stories, and thus have a narrative that is simultaneously a story about characters and an exploration of philosophical issues.
