Happy Halloween

A Passion 4 Life · Tweak How It Glows

Halloween takes over Balboa Island. The cottages don’t sit quietly—they throw on costumes louder than the kids running around. Skeletons sprawl across porches like they’ve been waiting all year for this moment, jack-o’-lanterns grin from every step, and cobwebs stretch so wide you wonder if the spiders signed a union contract. I walk down Marine Avenue grinning because every house seems to yell, “Beat this if you can!”

The neighbors don’t just hand out candy—they compete. One pours full-size chocolate bars into buckets, another stacks king-size KitKats like poker chips, and a third practically launches Reese’s Cups at passing superheroes.

And then there’s the fire department—those folks know how to do Halloween. They park the big red engine right out front, lights flashing just enough to make the whole block look like a party. Kids climb on board like it’s the ultimate jungle gym, parents snap a thousand photos, and the firefighters hand out candy with the same seriousness they’d use for saving lives. Honestly, if anyone wins Halloween on Balboa, it’s the fire station—because who can compete with a giant shiny truck and free chocolate?

Even the dogs strut in costumes: I saw a bulldog dressed as a hot dog, and I swear he knew he looked amazing. The ocean breeze tangles with pumpkin spice, skeletons row fake boats in the harbor, and I wrap up the night the only way that makes sense on Balboa—laughing with sticky fingers, carrying way too much candy, and already plotting which house I’ll “accidentally” revisit next year.
