This 26-foot-high statue was inspired by a famous photograph taken in New York’s Times Square on V-J Day in 1945 of a World War II sailor bending over to kiss a woman.
Glenn McDuffie, who claimed that he was the sailor, died at age 86 on March 9, 2014.
In the aftermath of 2019’s MeToo movement “Unconditional Surrender” was renamed “Embracing Peace” by the artist.
